On 10 August ARRI released LiOS 3.3.0, the firmware update for SkyPanel Pro, SkyPanel X and Orbiter. On paper it is a maintenance release and nobody is going to write a triumphant piece about it. But anyone who has spent half a day working out why a fixture hanging six metres up refused to answer the console knows these updates matter more than half the product announcements out there.

What is in LiOS 3.3.0

  • Enhanced DMX Live View: an at-a-glance overview of the active DMX control, readable directly on the fixture itself.
  • Smoothing for DMX Zone Modes: cleaner transitions when driving the fixture zones from a console.
  • Bug fixes and general reliability improvements.

Why DMX Live View is not a footnote

On a set with more than four or five fixtures on DMX, the console is almost never the problem: the problem is working out which parameter is actually reaching the fixture. Intensity that will not come up, a colour that does not match the programming, a zone that stays dark. Until now you diagnosed that by bouncing between the desk and the ladder. Being able to read on the fixture display what it is receiving right now turns a ten-minute round trip into a one-minute check.

In our view this is exactly the kind of feature nobody puts in a promo video, and exactly the kind that saves your morning when the client is already on set.

The downgrade trap

One warning worth repeating: from LiOS 3.1 onwards you can no longer roll back to earlier versions, because of the architectural changes introduced back then. Anyone running a lighting fleet needs to plan around that. The rule we apply ourselves, with other brands too: update after the job, never on the morning of the job. And update the whole fleet together, not one unit yes and one unit no, because a set running two firmware versions that respond slightly differently to the same command is the worst kind of thing to diagnose.

What this has to do with renting from us

We do not rent SkyPanels: our lighting fleet is built on other brands. But the lesson is identical, because our heads are driven over DMX or over an app as well, and they have firmware too. When a production picks up a kit from us, the fixtures leave already aligned to the same version, checked, and with the power side verified. It is the sort of invisible work you only notice when it is missing.

The maths productions do in Abruzzo

A high-end fixture is worth buying if you use it every week. For a three-day commercial, a short film or a documentary shot between L’Aquila, Pescara and the inland villages, renting is still the sensible call: you pay for the days you use, not for depreciation, and above all you do not pay for the time it takes to keep the gear updated and in order. That time is on us.

One last practical piece of advice, good for any brand: if you work on wired DMX, always carry a spare cable and a terminator. Ninety per cent of the problems blamed on firmware turn out to be a connector.
