There is sharper, faster and more modern glass in our inventory than the Cooke miniS4/i kit. And yet, when a DoP comes in to look at the gear in person before a short film or a commercial, that flight case is almost always the one that ends up in the van. The reason is not on a spec sheet: it is what these lenses do to a human face.

The “Cooke Look” is not marketing

The miniS4/i primes carry the same optical thinking as the S4/i, in shorter and lighter barrels, at a T2.8 aperture. On set that means a gentle roll-off between the focal plane and the out-of-focus area, and skin tones that already look believable straight off the sensor — no half hour of grading just to take the digital edge off someone’s face. On short-form drama or beauty work, that is the difference between footage that looks shot and footage that looks rendered.

The other advantage is less romantic: Cooke states the lenses are colour matched to each other and to the S4/i range. Swap focal lengths mid-scene and the colour of the frame does not move.

The numbers that matter

  • Seven focal lengths in our kit: 18, 25, 32, 50, 75, 100 and 135 mm. The full Cooke range runs to ten, from 18 to 135.
  • Constant T2.8 aperture, down to T22, with an eight-leaf linear module iris.
  • Super 35 coverage, PL mount with /i Technology contacts.
  • 87 mm front diameter on every focal length except the 18 mm, which is 110 mm.
  • 1.3 to 1.8 kg per lens, with 0.8 MOD focus and iris gears.

Who it is for

In our view the set earns its keep on three kinds of job. Short films and drama, where there is prep time and a focus puller on the team: proper barrels, long focus throw, factory-calibrated scales. Commercials and branded content with a person on camera, because the skin rendering cuts work in post. Music videos, where a fixed T2.8 across seven primes means you are not rechecking exposure every time you change lens.

Where we tell people to look elsewhere: one-person documentary and cine wedding work. Those need zooms, autofocus and reaction speed, and a set of manual PL primes becomes a burden in every sense. In those cases we suggest something else — telling you that costs us less than a wrong rental.

Why renting it in Abruzzo adds up

A full Cooke set is a tens-of-thousands investment, and it is not a purchase you amortise on two projects a year. Production here is almost always project-based: a short in the spring, a commercial in the autumn, branded content when it comes. Our kit is 350 € per day, 800 € for three days and 1,100 € per week (VAT excluded), delivery and pickup on set included across the region. Count the days you would actually use it: under three or four weeks a year, buying means locking up capital in glass that sleeps in a cupboard.

Three things we tell people before handing it over

  • The 18 mm has a different front. 110 mm against 87 mm on all the others: with a clip-on mattebox, bring the right ring or it will not mount. This is the mistake we see most often on a first outing.
  • Super 35, not full frame. On a full frame body you need to stay in S35 crop or it vignettes. With an ARRI ALEXA Mini, a RED KOMODO 6K or a RED GEMINI 5K S35 the question does not arise.
  • /i metadata only helps if something records it. The contacts pass focus and iris position plus individually calibrated distortion and shading maps — valuable in VFX, but check first that your camera body actually writes them into the file.

What we pair it with

The usual package is the Cooke miniS4/i with an ALEXA Mini, a Tilta MB-T12 mattebox and a Tilta Nucleus-M II wireless follow focus: with the focus throw on these lenses, putting wireless control in the AC’s hands changes the day. Everything else is in our complete kits, built to go out ready.

If you have a project coming up and want to work out whether this is the right set, write to us: we prep it checked and with the right filters, such as the NiSi ND IR 4×5.65 set if you are shooting exteriors in summer.
