Some camera bodies simply get old; others become a standard. The ARRI ALEXA Mini belongs to the second group: a decade after its debut it is still one of the most requested cameras on European sets, and in our rental fleet in Abruzzo it remains the workhorse for anyone who wants ARRI colour without the bulk of a studio camera.
Why the Mini is still the first choice
The reason is simple: it carries the same Super 35 ALEV III sensor as the “big” ALEXAs, with roughly 14 stops of dynamic range and the skin-tone rendering that made the brand famous. It does so in a carbon-fibre body of just 2.3 kg, sealed against dust and splashes and rated from -20°C to +45°C. On set that means one thing: the same image you see in a multi-million-euro feature, but on a shoulder, on a gimbal or hanging under a drone.
What it actually records
- ProRes up to 3.2K (3200×1800), up to 60 fps at full resolution;
- ARRIRAW 2.8K 16:9 up to 48 fps and Open Gate 3.4K (3424×2202) up to 30 fps;
- high speed up to 200 fps in 2K ProRes for slow motion;
- base EI 800 and the ARRI Look Library with 87 looks you can apply while shooting.
Available mounts are titanium PL, EF and B4: you can fit cine, stills or ENG glass without changing camera. All the details are on the official ARRI page.
Who it really suits
In our view the Mini shines when the image has to be top-tier but the set must stay light: commercials, music videos, documentaries and high-end cine weddings, where you need colour and exposure latitude but can’t afford a feature-film crew. It is also the right camera for moving shots: on a gimbal or a Steadicam its modest weight makes the difference by the end of the day.
Why rent it instead of buying
A Mini body complete with media, mount and accessories is still a major investment, and the cine market moves fast. For most of the productions we follow in Abruzzo (one or two shoots a month) buying never really pays off: you cover maintenance, upgrades and storage for a body that sits idle. Renting the ARRI ALEXA Mini only for the days you need gives you the same image at a fraction of the cost, with the camera already tested and ready to roll.
Two tips from our counter
First: the Mini “wants” its own media and the right batteries, so always plan cards and power (we hand over the complete kit). Second: use Open Gate 3.4K only if you genuinely need to reframe in post, otherwise stay in ProRes 3.2K and make your edit easier without loading up your storage.
What we pair it with
On set we happily pair it with a DJI RS 3 Pro stabiliser for movement, a Teradek Bolt 6 750 wireless video system to send the image to the director, and an Aputure LS 600x Pro light for interiors and night work. You’ll find the Mini and all its companions among our ready-to-use kits.
