If someone told us to keep one light in the warehouse and scrap everything else, the argument would be short: the SkyPanel S60 would stay. Not because it is the flashiest item in the catalogue — it isn’t — but because nine times out of ten the DoP finds it exactly where they expect it to be and doesn’t even need to test it.

What it actually does, in numbers

The emitting panel measures 645 x 300 mm and delivers soft light comparable to a 2 kW tungsten fixture while drawing 450 W at most. Colour temperature runs from 2800K to 10,000K with green/magenta correction, plus the full RGBW gamut for digital gels and effects. CRI 95, TLCI 90: figures that felt revolutionary back in 2015 and still hold their own next to much newer fixtures. It weighs about 12.6 kg with the manual yoke, is controlled over DMX/RDM and accepts 90-250 VAC or 23-36 VDC batteries.

The number that matters on set, though, isn’t on the spec sheet: it’s predictability. Set the SkyPanel to 4300K and what you see on the monitor is what you expected. It doesn’t invent anything on skin tones, and when you have to mix it with daylight coming through a window it won’t send you chasing green.

Who it suits

In our view the SkyPanel is unbeatable at three jobs. First, the interview: soft key up close, a piece of diffusion in front and you’re done in ten minutes, even in a low-ceilinged town hall. Second, bounced night interiors: aim it at a polyboard or a white ceiling and you get a believable ambience without ever seeing the source. Third, fill on a set where the hard key comes from a point source: here we almost always pair it with a Nanlux Evoke 1200 doing the sun, while the S60 holds the shadows up.

Where we would not recommend it: if you need to punch through a window from outside at noon, or you want a beam that travels twenty metres, you’re asking the wrong thing of the wrong fixture. Soft light is soft light.

Why rent it instead of buying

This part is simple arithmetic. A fixture in this class costs four figures even second-hand — and that’s before diffusion, a flight case and a serious stand, without which it’s useless. We rent it at 180 euro a day, 480 for three days, 720 a week, with the full diffusion kit (standard, lite, heavy, intensifier). If you shoot two or three projects a year the maths never favours buying: you tie up capital in a body that ages while it sits.

And ageing is literal here: ARRI has discontinued the S60-C and replaced it with the S60 Pro. That’s awkward news if you own one, less so if you rent: there is a huge installed base of S60-C units across Italy, spares are available, and the fixture is still the standard everyone knows how to operate. When the warehouse isn’t yours, obsolescence risk is our problem.

Three practical notes

  • Mind the power. 450 W is modest for a light like this, but it isn’t nothing: in an old Abruzzo farmhouse, putting the S60 on the same circuit as the coffee machine is the classic way to trip everything. Shooting off-grid, our 2 kW Honda EU20i generator handles it with plenty of headroom.
  • Don’t default to the standard diffusion. Most people mount the standard panel and stop there. Trying the heavy diffusion when you’re close to the subject changes the look: the source grows and the shadows close more gracefully.
  • Use a proper stand. Twelve and a half kilos on a lightweight tripod, with a piece of fabric in front acting as a sail, is an accident waiting to happen. It goes on a combo stand, with a sandbag.
