In our rental fleet, the URSA Cine 12K is the body we pull out when a production wants maximum detail and no compromises in post. It isn’t a camera for every set, and we’ll say it upfront: it’s a flagship large-format with a demanding workflow. But when you need it, nothing beats its price-to-quality ratio. Here’s when it makes sense to rent it in Abruzzo, from the people who keep one in-house.
What it is, in short
The Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K uses a large-format 36x24mm RGBW sensor (true full frame) with 16 stops of dynamic range. It records up to 12,288×8,040 at 24 fps in 3:2 open gate, hits 100 fps in 12K 17:9 and 144 fps in 8K, always in internal Blackmagic RAW. It has built-in 2, 4 and 6-stop ND filters matched to the camera’s colorimetry, and an interchangeable PL, LPL, EF or B4 mount with contact pins for lens metadata. It ships with the 8TB Media Module, which holds over four hours of 12K RAW.
Blackmagic lists it at 8,245 dollars body-only and 17,045 for the full kit: numbers that only pay off if you shoot year-round. For the vast majority of productions in Abruzzo, renting is the obvious call.
Who it’s really for
In our view the 12K shines on three kinds of work. First, high-end cinema and commercials, where the 16 stops and internal RAW give the colorist huge latitude and you won’t miss a studio camera when the budget doesn’t reach those figures. Second, anything built on reframing: 12K means you can crop, stabilize and recompose in 4K without losing a pixel, handy for advertising, wildlife documentary and VFX. Third, green screen and heavy keying, where resolution and RGBW color make the difference on the edges.
If instead you’re shooting a quick short, a cinematic wedding or a music video with a small crew, it’s too much camera: go for a nimbler body like the RED KOMODO 6K or the Sony BURANO, which two people can run without drowning in data.
Three tips from the field
- The data is heavy, truly. 12K RAW fills the 8TB fast: plan for long offloads, plenty of fast drives and an edit machine running DaVinci Resolve that can keep up. Without that backbone, 12K becomes a problem, not an advantage.
- Use the built-in NDs. They let you work clean in bright exteriors: in Abruzzo, between mountains and coast, you’ll use them every day and skip the matte box just for density.
- Plan your lenses first. It’s full frame: fit PL cine glass for the look, or EF to reuse your own kit. We suggest discussing it when we quote, so we prep the right mount for you.
What we pair it with
On set we almost always run it with a Teradek Bolt 6 750 wireless monitor for directing and video village, and we keep a lighter B-cam ready for coverage. You’ll find the body, lenses, media and accessories on our equipment page: tell us the type of production and we’ll put together the right kit without charging you for pieces you don’t need.
Official page on the Blackmagic Design site; for an independent technical deep-dive, the coverage from No Film School.
A wide range of equipment in our catalogue, on-set delivery included across Abruzzo.
