On July 15 Godox unveiled the KNOWLED AM800R, an 800W full-color 4’×4′ mat that pairs serious output with one idea that caught our eye right away: the frame is inflatable. No tubes to assemble, no softbox to rig — you plug in the pump, the surface tensions to 8 PSI in about a minute and holds its shape for days. For anyone who, like us, loads and unloads lights every week, that detail matters more than it sounds.

What the AM800R packs

On paper this is a proper cinema fixture, not a lightweight toy:

  • 800W RGBWW with a 1,800K to 10,000K range and ±100 GM green/magenta tuning;
  • high, consistent color: CRI ~96, TLCI ~98, TM-30 Rf ~96;
  • a 120×120 cm surface, with the light body alone at about 5 kg (the controller is heavier, ~6.4 kg);
  • CCT, HSI, RGBW, GEL, X-Y modes plus 12 effects, with linear, S-curve, exponential and logarithmic dimming;
  • control via DMX/RDM, CRMX, Ethernet (Art-Net/sACN), Bluetooth and the onboard panel;
  • and, crucially, an IP65 rating on body and controller, rated from -20°C to 45°C.

Announced price is $3,990 at pre-order. Not cheap, but right in line with large soft set sources.

Why we find it interesting, on set

A traditional 4×4 mat is soft and lovely, but bulky to move and always needs a frame to hang from. The inflatable logic flips the problem: van volume drops, one person can rig it, and IP65 protects you from spray and damp — which, on an outdoor shoot in Abruzzo across coast, mountains and winter night work, is no small thing. In our view the AM800R is the classic light for interviews, docs and commercials where you need a wide, clean source fast, and for music videos or cinematic weddings when set time is tight.

To be honest: 800W of RGBWW over a surface this large gives soft, diffused light, not a hard punch at distance. If you need to throw light far or fight the sun, that’s still the realm of COB fixtures like our Aputure LS 600x Pro. The AM800R is the complementary opposite: the wall-source that fills, softens and adds color.

Buy it or rent it?

The logic is simple. Nearly $4,000 plus controller, cables and accessories only pays off if you shoot constantly in that exact format. For most productions — a short, a commercial, a doc, a couple of shoots a year — renting makes more sense: you get the right light for that set without tying up capital or storing an inflatable frame that still needs care. It’s exactly the use case we exist for.
