There are directors who ask for diffusion and directors who don't want to "see" it. The Tiffen Black Satin 1/2 Filter is made for the latter: it smooths skin and softens the highlights ever so slightly with minimal halation, while black particles in the glass keep the veil in check and preserve overall contrast.

In practice it's one of those filters you can leave mounted for the whole shoot without creating continuity problems: at the 1/2 grade the effect reads on close-ups but doesn't muddy the wide shots or the graphics. On modern, very high-resolving cameras it's often the first thing we put in front of the lens.
