Modern sensors reveal every pore and every imperfection: sometimes the DoP's job is to take away, not add. The Tiffen Glimmerglass 4×5.65 kit in grades 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 is among the most-used diffusion filters for exactly this reason: it creates a delicate halation around light sources and softens skin tones, while the image still reads as sharp. On the monitor you spot it right away by the glass's characteristic sparkle.
The three grades let you dose the effect across a project: 1/8 almost invisible to take the edge off digital hardness, 1/4 on close-ups, 1/2 when you're after a distinctly diffused look. The format is 4×5.65 cinema, ready for any standard matte box.
