Description
For run & gun, documentary and fast-changing light there's little to debate: a ring is quicker than any filter tray. The Tiffen Variable ND 82mm covers 2 to 8 stops in a single rotation, with min/max markers engraved on the mount: keep your shutter at 180° and the aperture you want while moving from an interior to full sun outside, without dismantling anything.
It's built with Tiffen's ColorCore technology on water white glass, which keeps color rendering consistent across nearly the whole range; as with any variable ND, it's best to avoid the very last stretch of the ring on extreme wide angles to steer clear of the cross effect.
With an 82 mm thread and a set of step-up rings it covers virtually any photo lens. In rental it's one of the cheapest and most useful additions to a camera kit, and we often include it in deliveries for Abruzzo sets.
