On July 12, 2026 Sony released firmware Version 5.00 for the VENICE 2, and this is not the usual maintenance drop. A couple of the additions genuinely change how you work on set, especially if you move between the camera department, DIT and video village. We are looking at it as people who rent the VENICE 2 and physically bring it to the crew, not as people reading a spec sheet.

The new “Signature” look

The headline feature is the “Signature” monitoring preset, developed together with post-house Picture Shop. Sony promises more natural color reproduction, more believable skin tones and smoother transitions from shadows to highlights. On the ground that means a ready-made reference look on the monitor, without having to build a LUT from scratch on the first day of prep.

In our view this is the most interesting part for mid-tier Italian productions. When the budget cannot afford a dedicated DIT every shooting day, a solid colorimetric starting point right inside the camera saves precious time on set and reduces misunderstandings between the camera department and post. It is still a monitoring preset: the VENICE 2 keeps recording in X-OCN or ProRes, so you still have all the latitude you expect in grading.

4096x2160P 12G-SDI output and CNA-2

  • New 4K 12G-SDI output: the firmware adds the 4096x2160P output format at a 47.95 fps project frame rate over a single 12G-SDI cable. For multicamera work or feeding a village that sits a bit far away, one cable instead of four 3G-SDI runs means less to pack and fewer points of failure.
  • CNA-2 as a LAN adaptor: the Camera Control Network Adaptor can now act as a LAN conversion adaptor, simplifying remote camera control in networked setups.

Sony also fixed a couple of details that anyone actually working with the camera will appreciate: the “Out of Range” text in the moire alert during In-Camera VFX is more legible, and the bubble level markings are brighter on the monitor. Small things, but exactly the ones that make you curse at three in the morning on a dark exterior.

What it means for productions in Abruzzo

The VENICE 2 remains a serious production tool: cinema, high-end commercials, ambitious documentaries. For most outfits shooting between L’Aquila, Pescara and the Marsica, buying one makes no economic sense. A VENICE 2 body with a lens set costs as much as a flat, and the technology moves fast: this firmware is proof of that. Renting stays the rational choice, and with the update already installed on our bodies you arrive on set with the “Signature” look ready to go.

If you work on projects where the VENICE 2 is overkill but you still want consistent Sony color in multicamera, it is worth considering a mix with the Sony BURANO as a B-cam or the Sony FX6 for more agile shooting.
